5 Cake Decorating Tips for Beginners

Have your been baking a lot lately and want to take your cake decorating skills to the next level? You have made that delicious red velvet cake but want it to look as good as it taste. Try these five tips from Go Kitchen Carnival and elevate your cake to a more professional look.

Let your cake cool

We know it is tempting to start to decorate your cake as soon as you take it out the oven but that is a big no no. Let your cake cool completely first. In fact, you can even freeze your cake for at least 1 hour or sometimes even much longer. A firm cake is a much better cake to add decorations to.

Use a bakery cutter

Wanting to create a multi-tier cake? You do this by cutting your cake in half and using both halves to create different tiers. To get a nice even cut for your cake, use a bakery cutter. A leveled cake will allow you to create a much better looking cake when you decorate.

Use a turntable

A cake turntable is a life saver. It looks like a regular cake stand except that it spins. The spinning feature allows you to apply your finishing touches to your cake in a more even and consistent manner.

Cover mistakes this way

Cake decorating is sometimes tricky and you will not always get it right. Sometimes you will notice that the bottom edges of your cake looks unfinished or is not all together smooth. You can cover up your mistakes by dusting powdered sugar around the bottom. If you are making a chocolate cake, then we recommend using cocoa instead.

Use the right piping tip to write

Writing well wishes or birthday messages on a cake is not always easy. Using the correct piping tip will help to make this skill much easier. We recommend using a small round tip to write on cakes. It takes time to perfect writing on a cake, so put in a little practice before doing the real thing. Practice on parchment paper until you feel confident to write your message on the cake.
